Six Ways to Save the Sea Turtles

Friday May 22nd 2026
  1. Keep it dark– Artificial and bright lights can affect and distort the sea turtles’ vision. If you must use a flashlight (which we don’t recommend), use a red filter. Some red cellophane taped over your flashlight makes for a handy substitute.
  2. Leave them be– Sea turtles, even the baby ones, are a lot stronger than they seem! Their powerful jaws are used to crunch through clams, crabs, and other hard-armored creatures in their diet. They also make for a useful weapon, so beware of any snapping jaws that might be fending off any nosy tourists. For your safety and that of the turtles, please do not ride, handle, or hold them or their eggs. Keep a safe distance!
  3. Clean up– Leave the beach better than you found it! Clean up any trash, grab all your beach belongings, and leave no trace! Any left-behind items can become obstacles for mother and baby turtles making their way to and from the shore. Any litter that makes its way into the water could be mistaken for food or an animal could get tangled or injured in it.
  4. Knock it down and fill it in– While your sandcastle may be super impressive, they can be super dangerous to native wildlife! Before you leave the beach, knock down your sand sculpture and fill in any holes, so that our turtle friends can come and go as they please.
  5. Get involved– There are many opportunities to volunteer around the community, such as participating in beach cleanups and conservation talks. You can even adopt a sea turtle, supporting the Sea Turtle Conservancy's programs focusing on sea turtle research, education, advocacy, and the protection of important habitats.
  6. See something, say something– If you see anything suspicious, alert someone immediately. If you are in Florida, please call the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission at 850-488-3831. If you are in Alabama, please call Alabama Sea Turtles Share the Beach at 1-866-SEA-TURTLE
