Civil War Forts - Fort Pickens

Pensacola Beach, FL

There are two historic Civil War forts located near Perdido Key that are perfect for adventurers and history gurus alike. Fort Pickens, a Union fort, is located across the bay from Fort Barrancas (its sister Confederate fort) in the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Fort Pickens was built to defend Pensacola Bay and the Pensacola Navy Yard and Depot from foreign attack. The fort stood with its sister forts throughout the country safeguarding the democratic institutions of the young republic, and today it is an enduring symbol of the United States. Fort Pickens is equipped with historic cannons, guided tours, gift shops, and a brick tunnels to explore and may be reached by boat or car.
